Determine the best location for a parking light
2019-12-23

When you want to replace or install a parking light, you must plan ahead and consider many factors in terms of safety, visibility, installation and Maintenance. Read the rest of this article to determine the best location for parking lights.

The main things to consider when arranging parking lights:

Parking Light Style

Surrounding building

Parking lot lighting level

Allowable height of parking light pole

Parking Light Style

Choosing the right parking lot lights is the key to keeping the number and spacing of lights in the parking lot to a minimum. One factor to consider when choosing a fixture is the LER factor of the fixture. The US Department of Energy recommends a LER rating of at least 65. To calculate the LER value of an LED, divide by: the light output (lumens) / input power (watts) of the light fixture.

Surrounding building

When conducting on-site surveys of parking lot lights, pay attention to the location of surrounding buildings and how the public enters and leaves the parking lot. To prevent glare, attach a hood. Using the right optics will also help minimize light intrusion

Parking lot lighting level

Following table for its recommended light levels.

Basic
Enhanced Security
Minimum Horizontal Illuminance 0.2fc
0.5fc
Uniformity Ratio
20:1 15:1
Minimum Vertical Illuminance
0.1fc 0.25fc

When adjacent to a commercial property, the lighting intensity on the property line should not exceed 0.1 foot candle, and the lighting intensity at the boundary of the residential property should not exceed 0.05 foot candle.

Allowable height of parking light pole

Many states have listed maximum allowable heights for light poles, so they should be considered before the design phase. The size of the parking lot will usually determine the height of the light pole. In densely populated areas, shorter poles will ensure no glare, but more poles are needed to provide good coverage. Uniformity without having to worry about reducing public interaction due to glare. Designers can use glare levels or shadow brightness to ensure that the angle of discomfort does not exceed the standard.

Keep in mind that the above techniques will ensure a consistent design while providing adequate lighting safety without causing problems for the public.
