How to turn the garage into a gym

The article mentions a range of transformation methods, such as upgrading lights, increasing storage space, and making full use of natural light.

Let your garage space work for you.

Not everyone needs a private gym in their home, but an active couple has found a good way to turn unused garage space into a gym all year round.

For Luc and Stephanie, good health is an important part of their lifestyle. After a busy day at work, Luc likes to relax by exercising. Stephanie also likes to exercise and ride a bicycle.Together they have many fitness and sports equipment - bicycles, hockey bags, hockey sticks and free weights.

Instead of dragging all of these devices into the basement, they look at their single garage again. This is the perfect size for a fully functional home gym, and they almost don't want to use it for parking. The 20′ x 12′ space had high ceilings with lots of potential but there were also some challenges.

Design challenge

The garage space will be used throughout the year and additional insulation is required in winter. The headspace must be maximized to store their motion devices and increase headroom. After the garage door is opened, there is not much space for working at heights.

Due to the limited footprint, each inch must be used efficiently. The layout needs to accommodate all the sports equipment, but still feels enthusiastic. When they are not at home, it must be easy to clean and protect. Most importantly, the transformation must be within their budget.

Lighting upgrade

The height of the garage is 12 feet high. If low-bay lights are used, they will produce insufficient light, so the space will be difficult to light. We recommend using a 100W high bay light to provide sufficient brightness and save cost. Also take full advantage of natural light, you can change the brightness of artificial light according to the intensity of sunlight flowing into the gym.

Heating

The walls of the garage are insulated, but the garage doors are not. They replaced the old door with an insulated steel garage door. A garage heater is installed near the garage door to ensure that the winter space is warm and convenient for year-round use.

Increased clearance and safety

Installing a high lift garage door switch allows the garage door to open at a higher level, closer to the ceiling than the standard 7 or 8 feet. This provides plenty of vertical space for overhead exercise, such as standing shoulder presses, skipping and pull-ups.

Storage

Adiding offers a variety of solutions to maximize floor space and storage horizontal slat wall systems to maximize vertical storage of accessories such as baskets and small items. The deep shelf provides storage space for the fitness equipment, and the hooks are used to hang everything from the bicycle to the hockey bag.

Strategically placed overhead shelves lift and unaffect all seasonal and rarely used items. It is important to find the right balance between overhead storage and open space. Too much overhead storage will make the room feel smaller and may be a little claustrophobic. Equipment such as treadmills require ceiling space and can be folded into a vertical position when not in use. If the garage is not used as a gym, it may add more overhead storage.

Hardworking but easy to clean cabinets hold everything from skipping ropes and other exercise products to protein powders and supplements. When not in use, everything can be hidden in a closed door to keep it clean.
